Keyhole surgery

Keyhole surgery has revolutionised major abdominal surgery. Many operations which previously required very large abdominal incisions are now routinely performed by laparoscopic surgeons with fewer complications and improved results.

When a laparoscopic operation is performed, a small video camera is inserted into the abdomen. The surgeon views the procedure on a separate video monitor. Most laparoscopic surgeons believe this gives them better visualisation and access to key anatomical structures.

The camera and surgical instruments are inserted through small incisions made in the abdominal wall. This approach is considered less invasive than traditional "open" surgery because it replaces the need for one long incision to open the abdomen. A major advantage of laparoscopic surgery is that it results in a quicker recovery and less pain than traditional open surgery.

Laparoscopic weight loss surgery requires the surgeon to be trained in advanced laparoscopic techniques. Both surgeons at NSWLS have extensive training and experience in performing laparoscopic upper gastrointestinal surgery and laparoscopic weight loss surgery.
